The underpass was opened to traffic on 26 July 2026. It was delivered by the Karachi Development Authority — about 500 m long and 24 ft wide, completed in 16 months against a 24-month programme at a cost of around Rs 2 billion, and inaugurated by the Sindh Senior Minister for Local Government and the Mayor of Karachi. The figure in the specification panel is the estimated scheme cost at design stage, not the outturn cost.

Munawar Chowrangi is the main road of Gulistan-e-Johar. Once the interchange at Johar Chowrangi was built, the signal here was the only remaining interruption on the corridor — a signal running more than 90 seconds on each approach, in front of large markets and several schools, with the service road beyond the junction lost to encroachment and no U-turn left to replace it.
We prepared the design for the Karachi Development Authority: two lanes in each direction through a 100 m barrel with tapered ramps, so traffic merges without a bottleneck and the frontage in front of the malls is kept; service roads reinstated on both sides; and a stormwater holding tank beneath the barrel, sized from an intensity–duration–frequency curve built on Karachi rainfall data from the Meteorological Department, to hold at least half an hour of runoff in a heavy rainfall event.
The Karachi Development Authority opened the underpass to traffic on 26 July 2026.
