Project overview
The emergency building at PNS Shifa is ground plus two storeys and roughly 180,000 sq ft, designed for emergency reception, triage, resuscitation and observation.
Emergency planning is a problem of ordering rather than area. Reception, triage, resuscitation rooms, treatment bays, procedure rooms and a minor operating theatre are set in the sequence a patient actually passes through, with observation areas and doctors' and nursing stations placed so that staff can see the bays they are responsible for. Pharmacy and diagnostic support sit close enough to be used without leaving the department, and bed lifts, service stairs, a fire escape, a garbage chute and connecting corridors keep the supply and transfer routes off the clinical ones.
Above the ground floor the building reads as a long horizontal block, its window rhythm broken by vertical grey fins against white and grey finishes. The practice carried architecture, structural and MEP engineering and holds project management and detailed supervision.
